Six rounds, 63 games

A 64 team bracket has 6 rounds, with 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 games per round, and 63 games altogether. Double elimination would take 126 or 127 games. The first two rounds (32 plus 16 games) cut the field to 16 teams, and from the third round on the spectators can follow every game.

The logistics are the real work here. If every game takes 20 minutes, the 63 games are 21 hours of play on one court. On eight courts, the first round has 4 slots, the second 2 slots, and one slot for each of the following rounds: the tournament runs for 4 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 10 slots, about 3 hours and 20 minutes. Check that you have enough referees and a score desk for the first two rounds in particular, since that is where the traffic is.

A 64 team knockout needs many courts or a lot of time, so many organizers use groups first. Sixteen groups of four need 96 pool games and a 32-team knockout with 31 games, 127 games in total. A round robin of 64 is not recommended: it has 2016 games.

Standard seeding for sixty-four teams

Each pair in round one adds up to 65, from 1 against 64 to 32 against 33. The table lists the 32 pairings in bracket order, four per row. The top four seeds can only meet in the semifinals or later, and the top eight not before the quarterfinals. If fewer than 64 teams take part, the missing seeds from 64 downwards become byes for the best seeds.

Large fields: who uses a 64 team bracket

Mirrored print on one page

A 64 team bracket has 32 lines in the first round. Drawn in one direction on a landscape page it would force the names down to an unreadable size. The printed sheet is therefore mirrored: the upper 32 teams run from the left edge towards the middle, the lower 32 run from the right edge, and the final is in the center of the page. The smallest type on the sheet is 8.7 pt on A4 and 8.1 pt on Letter.

The blank version has empty lines and score boxes. The seeded version prints the seeds 1 to 64 in front of the lines. Names longer than about 14 characters are cut, so use short names or abbreviations on the sheet. If you want a wall poster, print the SVG on A3 or larger at a copy shop. The online view of the bracket stays left to right and can be zoomed.
