Twelve teams in a sixteen-team frame
The frame for 16 has 16 lines, and twelve teams fill 12 of them. The remaining 4 lines become byes. The bracket has 4 rounds and 11 games, and the games per round are 4, 4, 2, 1. Only 4 games are played in round one, with 8 teams, and the other 4 teams enter in the quarterfinals.
The byes go to seeds 1 to 4. They are the best four teams, and each of them is placed so that it meets a first-round winner in the quarterfinals: seed 1 plays the winner of 8 against 9, seed 2 the winner of 7 against 10, seed 3 the winner of 6 against 11 and seed 4 the winner of 5 against 12. The pairings from 5 to 12 in round one are all fixed by the same rule.
It suits a league with twelve teams. The top four rest while the middle and the bottom of the table play for the remaining quarterfinal places. Keep in mind that a bye is a real advantage: a bye saves one game and some rest, which in a short tournament is a real advantage. If your seeding is only a guess, draw the seeds at random instead.
Standard seeding with four byes
The table shows the frame for 16. Seeds 13 to 16 do not exist, so the games 1 against 16, 2 against 15, 3 against 14 and 4 against 13 turn into byes for the top four seeds.
| Round one | Pairings from top to bottom | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | 1 (bye) | 8 v 9 |
| 3 to 4 | 4 (bye) | 5 v 12 |
| 5 to 6 | 2 (bye) | 7 v 10 |
| 7 to 8 | 3 (bye) | 6 v 11 |
Typical uses for 12 teams
- Leagues with twelve teams. A playoff with byes for the top four rewards the regular season and keeps the first round short.
- Three groups of four. Twelve teams also split neatly into groups. With 3 groups of four you play 18 pool games. The best two of each group, six teams with two byes, then play a knockout of 5 games, 23 games in total. Choose the Groups format in the tool.
- Round robin. Everybody plays everybody: 66 games in 11 rounds with six games at once. Only practical with many courts or a league format that runs over weeks.
- Double elimination. 22 to 23 games, with the byes counting even less because every team has a second chance.
Print the 12 team bracket
On the printed sheet, the four bye lines are shown gray and in italics, next to the top seeds that they belong to, so a name cannot be written there by accident. The first round has only 4 games, and the rest of the bracket looks like a normal 8-team bracket. The blank sheet has no numbers. The seeded sheet shows 1 to 12 in the standard positions.
When you fill in the bracket online, add the twelve names in order of strength, choose standard seeding and the tool places the byes for you. If all twelve are equal, choose a random order. After that the score entry works as in every other bracket.
