Four rounds from the round of 16 to the final
A 16 team bracket is perfectly balanced: no byes, 4 rounds, and 8, 4, 2, 1 games per round, which adds up to 15. The first round is often called the round of 16, followed by the quarterfinals, the semifinals and the final. With a game for third place it is 16.
It is also the first size where the schedule needs thought. Eight games in round one means eight pairs waiting. With two courts that is four time slots just for the first round. A good habit is to put the first-round pairings on the wall at least a day ahead and to let teams know their time slot in advance.
Beyond 16 teams, the early rounds need more courts or more time. A round robin of sixteen would need 120 games, which is only realistic over several weeks. Four groups of four take 24 pool games plus a knockout of 7 games, 31 in total, and are a common compromise.
Standard seeding for sixteen teams
Each first-round pair adds up to 17: 1 against 16, 8 against 9, 4 against 13, 5 against 12 and so on, listed from the top to the bottom of the bracket. The result is that seed 1 meets seed 2 only in the final, seeds 1 to 4 can meet only in the semifinals or later, and the favorites meet the weakest teams first.
| Round one | Pairings from top to bottom | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | 1 v 16 | 8 v 9 |
| 3 to 4 | 4 v 13 | 5 v 12 |
| 5 to 6 | 2 v 15 | 7 v 10 |
| 7 to 8 | 3 v 14 | 6 v 11 |

Print the 16 team bracket
The sheet fits on one landscape page of A4 or Letter with a readable type size. There are two versions: a blank one with empty lines and boxes for the scores, and a seeded one with 1 to 16 in front of the first-round lines. The blank one suits a draw at the event: write the names in as they are drawn. The seeded one suits a ranking, where seed 1 meets seed 16 and the rest follow the standard order.
If you want automatic advancement, choose "Fill in online". The bracket opens with sixteen placeholders called Team 1 to Team 16 in standard seeding, and you replace them with the real names.
