Five rounds and 31 games
A 32 team bracket has 5 rounds. The rounds have 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 games. Altogether that is 31 games, or 32 with a game for third place. Nobody gets a bye. Double elimination takes 62 or 63 games, roughly twice as many.
The number to plan with is the first round: 16 games at once. With four courts that is four time slots, and the first round alone might take two hours. That is why large events often spread the rounds over two days, or play the first round as a qualifier earlier. For a long event, the live link is useful because the players do not have to crowd around a single sheet.
A round robin of 32 teams would need 496 games, which is not realistic. The usual alternative is eight groups of four: 48 pool games, then a knockout of the best sixteen with 15 games, 63 in total.
Standard seeding for thirty-two teams
Each first-round pair adds up to 33, from 1 against 32 to 16 against 17. The table lists the 16 pairings in bracket order, four per row. Seeds 1 and 2 are placed at opposite ends and can only meet in the final, seeds 1 to 4 can only meet in the semifinals or later, and so on.
| Round one | Pairings from top to bottom | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 1 v 32 | 16 v 17 | 8 v 25 | 9 v 24 |
| 5 to 8 | 4 v 29 | 13 v 20 | 5 v 28 | 12 v 21 |
| 9 to 12 | 2 v 31 | 15 v 18 | 7 v 26 | 10 v 23 |
| 13 to 16 | 3 v 30 | 14 v 19 | 6 v 27 | 11 v 22 |
Typical 32 team events
- Open cups. Local soccer, basketball or volleyball cups for companies, schools and clubs, where each side plays at least one game on a single day.
- Esports. The bracket of an open online qualifier, with a best-of-three or best-of-one in each game.
- School-wide competitions. Every class sends a team, and a school with 32 classes fills the bracket exactly.
- Charity events. Everybody pays a fee and plays at least once. For fairness, draw the seeding at random.
Mirrored print on one page
On a single landscape page, a 32 team bracket drawn from left to right would shrink the names to an unreadable size. So the sheet is drawn mirrored: the upper half of the field runs from the left edge towards the middle, the lower half runs from the right edge towards the middle, and the final sits in the center. The smallest type on the sheet is 8.9 pt on A4 and 8.3 pt on Letter, which is readable from an arm’s length. The blank sheet has empty lines and score boxes, and the seeded sheet carries the seeds 1 to 32.
The online version on the screen keeps the usual left-to-right tree, which scrolls and zooms. Only the printed sheet is mirrored. If you also want a poster, print on A3 at a copy shop.

31 games in single elimination, or 32 with a game for third place. Double elimination takes 62 to 63 games.

Drawn in one direction, the five columns and 16 rows would need a very small type. In two halves the page is used better and the smallest type stays at 8.3 pt or more.

5 rounds. 16 games are played in round one and the number halves from round to round.

Is there an alternative to a 32 team knockout?
Eight groups of four followed by a knockout of 16 teams: 63 games, and everybody plays at least three.
