6 Team Bracket: Printable and Fill-in Online
Six teams do not fill a bracket, so two of them get a free pass. This page shows who skips round one and why, and gives you the sheet to print or fill in.

Byes in a 6 team bracket
Brackets are built in powers of two, so six teams use the frame for 8. That leaves 2 empty slots, called byes. A team facing a bye advances without playing. The bracket has 3 rounds and 5 games: only two in the first round, two semifinals and the final (2, 2, 1 games per round).
Who gets the byes? The two best seeds, 1 and 2. They are the teams that earned the advantage in the regular season or in the draw, and they play one game fewer on the way to the final. The byes also sit at opposite ends of the bracket, so the top two seeds can only meet in the final.
The other four teams play in round one: seed 3 against seed 6 and seed 4 against seed 5. The winners then face the rested top seeds in the semifinals. Because a bye is a real advantage, use it only if the ranking means something. Otherwise draw the seeds at random.
Standard seeding with two byes
The table shows the frame for 8. Seeds 7 and 8 do not exist, so the pairings 1 against 8 and 2 against 7 turn into byes for seed 1 and seed 2.
| Round one | Pairings from top to bottom |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 (bye) |
| 2 | 4 v 5 |
| 3 | 2 (bye) |
| 4 | 3 v 6 |
Where six teams usually show up
- Leagues with six clubs. Table tennis, darts or volleyball leagues with six teams can end with a playoff. Seeds 1 and 2 rest, seeds 3 to 6 fight for the semifinal spots.
- Two pools of three. A common alternative is 2 groups of three teams, with 6 pool games in total, followed by a knockout of the best two of each group. Together that is 9 games. Use the tool with the Groups format for it.
- Six-team round robin. Everybody plays everybody: 15 games in 5 rounds with three games at once, and no byes at all. It suits a day with enough courts.
- Double elimination. With six teams it takes 10 to 11 games and gives the byes less weight, because a loss is no longer the end.
Print the 6 team bracket
The printable sheet already contains the layout for 8 slots. Two lines are marked as byes and printed in gray italics, so nobody writes a name on them by mistake. The blank sheet has no numbers. The seeded sheet shows seeds 1 to 6 in front of each line, with seeds 1 and 2 sitting next to the byes.
If you fill it in online, type six names from strongest to weakest and choose standard seeding. The tool puts the byes at the top two seeds by itself, and the winners move forward automatically after you enter a score.

Questions and answers
How many games are in a 6 team bracket?
5 games in single elimination: two in the first round, two semifinals and the final. With a game for third place it is 6. A double elimination bracket for six teams takes 10 to 11 games.
Who gets the byes with 6 teams?
The top two seeds. Seed 1 and seed 2 start in the semifinals while seeds 3 to 6 play a first-round game.
Can I give the byes to other teams?
No. A bye always goes to the best-placed slots of the bracket, which are the top seeds. To change who gets one, change the order of the names or give the teams other seeds.
Is a bye unfair to the others?
It is an advantage, so it should be earned: use the regular-season standings or a qualifier for the seeding. For a casual event, draw the seeds at random so the byes are pure luck.
What is a better format for 6 teams if I want everyone to play more?
Two groups of three followed by semifinals, or a full round robin with 15 games in 5 rounds. Both are available in the online tool.
